Trenches were dug across our school yard, individual families built air raid shelters and my father patrolled the streets at night as an Air Raid Precautions Warden. It was a powerful experience and I have never forgotten it. So it was with great relief and joy that I welcomed VP Day when it came, over three years later. On the day chosen for celebration 16 August I think , crowds flowed out into the streets of central Melbourne, and gathered at scenic places around the Bay.
